Synopsis: An intimate journey through the places most affected by the Balkan war. A path that crosses the different landscapes and the gazes of those who observe them, questioning the real nature of what we see and the interpretation we can give of it. A journey between different reflections, fleeting visions, perpetually mediated by the window of a train which acts as a limit that cannot be crossed. This work is measured with the value of memory and the limits of the gaze, both destined to rarefaction.

Biography: My name is Samuele Giorgetti, I am 27 years old and I am a young director based in Bologna (Italy). I attended a degree in Cinema at the University of Bologna and I have currently finished making two short films that are being distributed: Peron (2024), Handycam (2024). For about two years I have been working for the production company Black Sheep and for the creation of various commercials and videoclips. I am currently dedicating myself to the development of a new documentary project.

In The Palace: What made you make this documentary?

Samuele Giorgetti (director): I started this project almost five years ago. While traveling by train, I shot a couple of images, but I did not know what to do with them. I just shot them following my sensations and after a long time I wanted to do something with them and I started thinking about that journey and the memories I had, the best moments of it.  While visiting different cities, travelling from one city to another, I selected the images from my last trip in the Balkans, since I felt it was the most truthful experience in the whole journey. I was thinking about the speed of the images and the fact that I could only watch the landscapes from the window.

In The Palace: Which are the places that you have been to?

Samuele Giorgetti:  I followed most of the places from around the world from the nineties. I started from Slovenia and then went down to Serbia, then Bosnia and Herzegovina. I did not have the chance to come to Bulgaria, I wanted to, but I did not have enough time. However, I think that “Peron” is a film about the whole Balkans. And also coming here in Pernik, Bulgaria by train reminded me of this trip.  It has been a big pleasure for me to travel to this region again.

In The Palace: Do you have plans for making another movie?

Samuele Giorgetti: I have a project about my home town, a documentary again. I come from the seaside of Italy, near Rimini, so there are a lot of tourists in my home place. I want to do a documentary about tourism in my hometown by the way it is seen by locals.
