As the only road leading to the Caucasus mountain region of Tusheti, Georgia, closes for 7 months of winter, a handful of holdouts remain. Experiencing time outside the flow of state regulation and consumer exchange, this smattering of people form a tight, interdependent group — navigating intergenerational friction, the remnants of the Soviet Union, and uncertainty over their community’s future.

Robert Hope, a documentary director and producer, divides his time between San Francisco and Tbilisi, Georgia. His work focuses on community, loss, and the concept of home. Last year he received a year-long fellowship for his current documentary work in the Caucasus. His short doc, Heaven on Earth, played in multiple U.S. Oscar-qualifying festivals and was released online through Directors Notes. He holds an M.F.A in film production from The University of Texas.
