NOT SHORT AT ALL FILM COMPETITION

SPECIAL MENTION

AMPLITUDE MODULATION

dir. Nicolás Fernández

Chile, 2020, 39`

BEST FILM

ONDINE

dir. Tomasz Sliwinski

Poland, 2019, 40`

18th in the palace winners

“Intense film with empathic, strong characters, especially Cezary is credible. We like the style very much, the blue-green colours symbolizing underwater feeling and the rhythm and tempo are very good. The fear about Cezary and the pull effect of the story make it a memorable film. But the film could be longer, slower, it could have a longer breath to get a deeper connection to Cezary's disease.

The story struck at a very personal chord. Emotional and touching story of love, commitment, sacrifice and that desire to live even when life hits you so hard, that you might feel doomed. This profound and layered story immersed in the world of the hero in such a natural, unpretentious and authentic way that it won our hearts completely.”

Jury members: Francesca Vargiu (Italy), Martin Iliev (Bulgaria), Petra Zöpnek (Austria)

DOCUMENTARY & EXPERIMENTAL COMPETITION

  • BEST EXPERIMENTAL FILM CATEGORY

THE NIGHT SHATTERS MY SHADOWS

dir. Luis Esguerra Cifuentes

Colombia, 2020, 20`

18th IN THE PALACE WINNERS

"Pure poetry full of secrets, wide image-to-text gap: Budapest, Vienna, Iran, Slovakia, a feverish dream-travel. The smell of the darkroom for photography, pictures that give the impression you could touch them, the underwater sound for diving into the unconscious.

All that an experimental film needs. A film poem told by Luis Esqiuerra Cifuentes lying on Sigmund Freud's coach.

Jury members: Francesca Vargiu (Italy), Martin Iliev (Bulgaria), Petra Zöpnek (Austria)

  • BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM CATEGORY

SPECIAL MENTION

THE EAGLES OF CARTHAGE

dir. Adriano Valerio

Italy, 2020, 19`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

"Eagles illustrates an innovative and compelling use of archival footage that brings a historical event to life in a refreshing and unusual fashion."

BEST DOCUMENTARY FILM

MUTHA & THE DEATH OF HAMMA-FUKU

dir. Daniel Suberviola

Spain, 2021, 25`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

"Mutha is a beautifully composed and personal meditation on mortality through the eyes of a de-miner in the Western Sahara. The film manages both eloquence and intimacy while exhibiting the highest level of craft-manship throughout."

Jury members: Faisal Qureshi (UK), Gareth Warland (UK), Skye Fitzgerald (USA)

STUDENT COMPETITION

  • BEST STUDENT ANIMATION FILM CATEGORY

SPECIAL MENTION

LOVE IS JUST A DEATH AWAY

dir. Bára Anna Stejskalová

Czech Republic, 2020, 12`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“Creepy, eccentric & wonderfully imagined were the words that came to mind when describing this film. We felt this film deserved a special mention for its artistic creativity and entertaining message that even in death, there is plenty of life to be experienced. With similarities to Wes Andersons ‘Isle of Dogs’ and Dan Harmons ‘Rick & Morty’ this was a thoroughly entertaining and engaging animation.”

BEST STUDENT ANIMATION FILM

MAY THE WORLD NOT CARRY YOU

dir. Rozalia Ogonowska

Poland, 2019, 4`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“We chose this film as this years Best Student Animation as we felt it was beautifully crafted, well structured and developed with resonating symbolism leaving an emotional impact on it’s audience. Each frame was beautifully painted and put together, with such intricate detail showcasing time period, adding to the overall mood and power of the piece.

  • BEST STUDENT FICTION FILM CATEGORY

SPECIAL MENTION

WAID

dir. Lorenz Piehl

Germany, 2021, 21`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“This film deserves a special mention for the cinematography which we felt enhanced the mysticism and isolation of the piece. It is not easy being parents, but more so when you’re afraid of your children. We thought the cinematography perfectly captured the beauty and power of nature in the film.”

SPECIAL MENTION

AYAAN

dir. Alies Sluiter

Australia, 2020, 18`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“This film was tense, beautiful and everything to be admired in a short film. One area that stood out in particular was the sound design which we believed captured the tension brilliantly throughout. Encapsulating the searing hot outback sun with the sound of feet desperately running through sand with a breathless rhythm, as an audience we were constantly at the edge of our seat.

BEST STUDENT FICTION FILM

THE DRESS

dir. Tadeusz Łysiak

Poland, 2020, 30`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“As a Jury we were all in agreement that this film highlighted a filmmaker in total control of his craft. It was brave, visceral and authentic, a masterclass in filmmaking and storytelling. This film is brilliantly written and performed with each and every character flawed in their own unique way. The cinematography was subtle yet powerful, placing you right in the POV of the lead character. It is thought provoking, poetic and powerful, leaving you in total awe of the film.”

Jury members: Julien Cornwall (UK), Teodora Markova (Bulgaria), Yusuf Saigi (Turkey)

SILVER PRINCESS COMPETITION

  • BEST ANIMATION FILM CATEGORY

SPECIAL MENTION

REFLECTON

dir. Juan Carlos Mostaza

Spain, 2020, 11`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“For its narrative, sensibility and the way it shows up this real and hard disease that is anorexia.”

SPECIAL MENTION

HEART OF GOLD

dir. Simon Filliot

France, 2020, 13`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“Using animation as a medium to describe a heartless world, this film manages to be both a parable and a realistic overview of what social injustice means. The special mention award for animation goes to HEART OF GOLD.

BEST ANIMATION FILM

BOXBALLET

dir. Anton Dyakov

Russia, 2019, 16`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“For the exquisite use of classical technique and a humorous but meaningful depiction of a surprising love story, the best animation award goes, with an unanimous vote from the jury, to BOXBALLET by Anton Dyakov.

  • BEST FICTION FILM CATEGORY

SPECIAL MENTION

UXOLILE

dir. Portia Hlubi

South Africa, 2020, 24`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“For the powerful authentic performances and courage in tackling difficult subjects of abuse, sexual exploitation, and unhealed wounds between a mother and a daughter.

SPECIAL MENTION

DETOURS

dir. Christopher Yates

Belgium, 2019, 18`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“Detours is a compelling, well executed story that questions what it takes to be a man and a father. It has a clear dramatic structure and the character's moral conflict between protecting his child versus taking responsibility for his wrongdoing makes us reflect upon human nature and our own choices.

Thanks to well crafted editing it maintains high suspense throughout and keeps us on our toes till the end, without giving easy answers.

BEST FICTION FILM CATEGORY

BLACK HOLE

dir. Tristan Aymon

Switzerland, 2020, 29`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“Black Hole is a film which manages subtly and without pretensions to create and present a very intimate and sincere experience, one which takes us back to our own youth, our first experiences with love, separation and moving on. The film does this with characters that are memorable and authentic and without telling the viewer how to feel. The director's voice feels fresh and its distinctive visual language stays deeply ingrained in the viewer's mind.”

  • BEST NATIONAL FILM CATEGORY

GOOD NIGHT, LILY

dir. Peter Vulchev

Bulgaria, 2021, 25`

18TH IN THE PALACE WINNERS

“For an intimate and touching visual exploration of ageing, memory and love the award goes to: Good night, Lily.”

IN THE PALACE jury 202

IN THE PALACE.

One lovely and long waited week just officially ended!

A week of 128 films, physical screenings, online screenings, Q&A sessions, pressconferences, presentations, pitching session, nice people, sweet talks, many many drinks and team just of 3 (and a half).

Indeed it was a too crazy and long year. Indeed it was too strange festival edition - welcoming only Bulgarian industry and audience for a very first time in our history. But even though everything was almost perfect. Almost, because we missed you all really bad! The festival would never be the same without you being here and sharing with us this one so special week!

But we are sure that better times will come soon and we`ll have the chance to meet you another time. Why not in 2021!

Thank you all for your amazing films and work – it was an honor to present you here in sunny Varna!

Thanks to the jury members for their dedicated and professional work!

Thanks to all the people who dared to get in the cinema halls! You already know how important this is, especially now!

Thanks to all of our friends for their kind support! We love you so much!

Thanks to our families for being that patient through all the year – we are coming home now!

You all stay safe and be ready for 2021!

Truly yours,

Galina, Tsanko and Liliya

CALL FOR PITCHING 2020

17th IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival

(15-22 September)

15TH FILMER FORGE Short Film Pitch 2020

The forthcoming edition of FILMER FORGE industry programme invites authors of compelling short film projects to pitch them in front of an international panel and win a grant towards their production and/or find new partners.

The pitching session will have two related sections, as follows:

I. NATIONAL PROJECTS

Bulgarian filmmakers and producers who seek producing, funding, and development opportunities for their current or upcoming short film are invited to apply. Up to 20 national projects, selected on the basis of their application, will be invited to pitch to a national panel, and the 10 best projects will have the opportunity to take part in the INTERNATIONAL PITCHING of the pitching session.

II. INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

International filmmakers and producers who seek producing, funding, and development opportunities for their current or upcoming short film project are invited to apply. Selected projects will be invited to present their work to an international panel.

On both pitching panels, each project team/representative will have a fixed time (7 min) to present their project and answer questions raised by the panel only. The competition focus will be on the originality of the concept, the artistic and production potential of the project, and on how convincing was the pitch itself.

In order to provide the best possible environment for international networking and project development, FILMER FORGE will be inviting a range of industry enablers to attend the pitching sessions. To ensure that all projects receive feedback, we will also be setting up face-to-face “speed dating” meetings between those who have taken part in the pitching, the panel members, and the attending industry representatives – funders, producers, distributors, buyers, festival representatives, etc.

The best project/s will be receiving a financial grant.

How to apply?

All applicants (national and international) are invited to complete the Application Form and send it together with the additional materials to: filmerforge@inthepalace.com

The deadline is 15 July 2020.

Submit your projects now!

STUDENT COMPETITION

  • BEST STUDENT ANIMATION CATEGORY

SPECIAL MENTION: CIRCUIT by Delia Hess, Switzerland

16TH IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival

We have decided to give this animation a special mention because it effectively opens a poetic world of images that successfully negotiate the border between the abstract and the concrete, the eternal and the temporary. The animation represents the universal symbol of the circle in a rich variety of forms and shapes, and renders the topic of the delicate balance between humans and their environment. The images rhythmically flow into one another and build into a story that highlights cyclic recurrence and regeneration.

BEST STUDENT ANIMATION: THE KITE by Martin Smatana, Czech Republic/Slovakia/Poland

16TH IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival

We have decided to award this animation because it tells a life-affirming story through a visual technique that creates a heart-warming backdrop.Linear narrative is broken by a dream-like sequence leading to acceptance of the loss of a loved one as spiritual enrichment. The elaborate technique produces a surprising narrative development, and adds original details that create three dimensional characterization.

  • BEST STUDENT FICTION CATEGORY

SPECIAL MENTION: MILLER & SON by Asher Jelinsky, United States

16TH IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival

After a heated debate, the jury has decided to give this film a special mention because it problematizes the masculine space introduced in the film using cinematic means in an efficient yet eloquent manner. We especially commend the use of the camera and editing to project a subjective experience, and reflect the tense situation the protagonist finds himself in. Suspense is built until the eventual confrontation which reconfigures the relationships among the characters. The film sends a message of acceptance of different identities and fatherly love, even in what may seem as the most unlikely of situations.

BEST STUDENT FICTION: DOUBLE D by Fey Lehiane, Netherlands

16TH IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival

We have decided to award this film because it offers an original perspective on the topic of the transition from childhood to adolescence, in opposition to other stories where this experience is often portrayed in a negative light. The narrative prioritizes community and girl bonding, avoiding stereotypes. Further, the film’s mise-en-scène is dense with ample and diverse visual details on the communal and personal dynamics. The atmosphere is light yet captures the depth and seriousness of the lived reality, both as a positive experience and as an important stage in the growth to maturity.

FILMER FORGE Short Film Pitch 2019

The forthcoming edition of FILMER FORGE@IN THE PALACE invites authors of compelling short film projects to pitch them in front of an international panel and win a grant towards their production.

The pitching session will have two related sections, as follows:

I. NATIONAL PITCHING/DAY ONE/23 September 2019

Bulgarian filmmakers and producers who seek producing, funding, and development opportunities for their current or upcoming short film are invited to apply. Up to 20 national projects, selected on the basis of their application, will be invited to pitch to an international panel, and the 10 best projects will have the opportunity to take part in the INTERNATIONAL PITCHING on the second day of the pitching session.

II. INTERNATIONAL PITCHING/DAY TWO/24 September 2019

International filmmakers and producers who seek producing, funding, and development opportunities for their current or upcoming short film project are invited to apply. Selected projects will be invited to present their work to an international panel.

On both pitching days, each project team/representative will have a fixed time to present their project and answer questions raised by the panel only. The competition focus will be on the originality of the concept, the artistic and production potential of the project, and on how convincing was the pitch itself.

In order to provide the best possible environment for international networking and project development, FILMER FORGE will be inviting a range of industry enablers to attend the pitching sessions. To ensure that all projects receive feedback, we will also be setting up face-to-face “speed date” meetings between those who have taken part in the pitching, the panel members, and the attending industry representatives – funders, producers, distributors, buyers, festival representatives, etc.

The best project/s will be receiving a financial grant.

All applicants (national and international) are invited to complete the Application Form and send it together with the additional materials to: filmerforge@inthepalace.com

closing ceremony

After an exciting week filled with film, music, partying, rain and thunder, the time had come to announce the winners of 15th IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival in the different competition categories.

During the closing ceremony of its 15th edition the festival made an unexpected official statement which shocked the audience attended the closing event. For more information, please check below in the article.

PITCHING SESSION

PSYCHICKEN, by Ata Mojabi, Italy

psychicken

It is often said that drama is a far easier genre to tackle compared to comedy and so one could not ignore the many laughs that one project succeeded in raising during the pitch. A homage to such legendary animators as Chuck Jones and Tex Avery, we award the pitch award to ATA MOJABI for PSYCHICKEN and hope to see it at this festival soon.

Jury members: Faisal Azam-Qureshi, Massimiliano Nardulli, Rossitsa Valkanova

STUDENT COMPETITION

SPECIAL MENTION FOR BEST STUDENT FICTION: MILLIMETERLE by Pascal Reinmann, Switzerland

millimeterle

The discussion concerning Best Student Short was heated and passionate. Special mention should be given to a visually impressive yet compelling short that didn't flinch from the darkness of teenage sexual violence. So the jury notes the accomplishment of Pascal Reinmann's MILLIMETERLE.

BEST STUDENT FICTION: SHADOWS, by Victoria Karakoleva, Bulgaria

shadows

For the freshness and poetical approach to a sensitive issue, for the beauty of its cinematic expression, the prize for the best student fiction goes to Shadows by Victoria Karakoleva.

BEST STUDENT ANIMATION: HAPPY END by Jan Saska, Czech Republic

happy end

The range of animation and techniques in the animation category varied from surreal claymation to imaginative computer graphic imaging. Subjects ranged from an examination of the subconscious to the tactile nature of love. Despite this, story was often neglected in favour of style but this can't be said for the winning animation. A short non-linear examination of the consequences of a simple accident, the jury is unified in awarding best animation to Jan Saska for HAPPY END.

BEST STUDENT DOCUMENTARY: THE SANDMAN by Lauren Knapp, USA

the sandman

Many of the documentaries blurred the lines between observation and staging for visual effect. There were diverse subject matters from an elderly painter of religious icons to a post-apocalyptic landscape where horses live amongst the ruins of man's civilisation. But one documentary stood out for it's examination of medical ethics colliding with over-reaching state power. Given unique access to those who wield the power of life and death over one of the biggest prison populations in the US, the jury is unified in awarding best documentary to Lauren Knapp for THE SANDMAN.

Jury members: Denis Mujovic, Faisal Azam-Qureshi, Manuela Cernat

DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION

SPECIAL JURY MENTION: MERYEM by Reber Dosky, The Netherlands

meryem

A powerful look at conflict through the eyes of a group of brave and awesome warrior women.

BEST DOCUMENTARY: RAKIJADA - DISTILLATED VILLAGE TALES by Nikola Ilic, Serbia/Switzerland

rakijada

A refreshing and humorous portrayal of a small community and its eccentric characters that makes us understand the complex nature of Serbian men.

Jury members: Kasia Klimkievich, Massimiliano Nardulli, Philip Ilson

OSCAR QUALIFICATION CONTENDERS COMPETITION

SPECIAL JURY MENTION: DOWNSIDE UP by Peter Ghesquiere, Belgium

downside up

This film is a very clever take on the world being different. Turning Down’s syndrome into the norm was very creative. Looked beautiful, great cinematography. Complete story was told in a compact style.

SPECIAL JURY MENTION FOR SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS FILM: HAVE NO FEAR by Marco Calvise, Italy

have no fear

Absolute tour de force acting by all, gripping Alzheimer’s tale with an emotional punch that breaks your heart.

BEST BULGARIAN SHORT FILM: BANGO VASSIL by Milen Vitanov, Bulgaria

bango vassil

This Bulgarian film is lovely animation. It tells a very strong story, appropriate for both children and adults, with a nod to today’s racial tensions.

BEST INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION: CONFINO by Nico Bonomolo, Italy

confino

This film is beautiful animation with a great story very well told. It is a very beautiful use of storytelling with a strong emotional punch

BEST INTERNATIONAL SHORT: WAVE by Benjamin Cleary and T J O’Grady Peyton, Ireland

wave

This film is a unanimous decision, imaginative, humorous, touching, different and inventive. It made us watch closely. Creating a unique language is very clever. The actor/director carried the film with ease. At 16 minutes it was perfectly timed.

Jury members: Alan McQueen, Bozhidar Manov, Sandi Sissel

SOFIA UNIVERSITY "ST. KLIMENT OHRISKI"AWARD: SHAME by Petar Krumov, Bulgaria

shame

Petar Krumov is awarded for his specific cinematic expression, original story and good direction. He uses his good command of the black-and-white form in order to intensify the message of the story and the main character’s inner world. The optimistic ironical ending balances the realistic depiction of the dark life of a teenager in unprivileged or unfavorable conditions. The cast of non-professional actors contributes to the spontaneity and truthfulness of characters’ representation. Due to the originality of the narrative, the realistic and natural acting (of course attainable due to adequate director’s work) the cinema-verité taste of the camera movement, and the social thematic, this films stands out in contemporary Bulgarian short film making.

Congratulations to all winners of 15th IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival!

On behalf of all the team, we would like to thank all our festival partners, the volunteers under Erasmus+ Program of EU, the participants, our guests and jury members.
