EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME

IN THE PALACE International Short Film Festival`s educational program FILMER FORGE is an annual audio-visual training in the framework of the festival including a series of integrated educational streams, workshops, lectures, case studies and master classes. Filmer Forge is an international initiative directed towards talented young filmmakers, who have certain experience in creating short forms. The educational program aims to give participants opportunities to master their practical skills, reap the benefits from working in a team, and create an environment for exchange of cultures and practice together with filmmakers from Europe and the world.

FILMER FORGE includes a range of educational activities led by established directors, cinematographers, scriptwriters, producers, editors, digital artists, etc. The platform integrates these by means of several parallel programs - a series of lectures, master classes, hands-on trainings, a pitching session, etc. Well established filmmakers have been traditionally invited to share their experience and knowledge with the young and support them succeed in their careers. Over the years, the Festival has hosted both national and international celebrities.

Short Films in Turkey: Themes & Aesthetics, Screening Possibilities and Industry Relations

Speaker: Şirin Erensoy

FILMER FORGE 2019

Şirin Erensoy wrote her PhD dissertation on the subversion of generic conventions in contemporary French cinema. Her academic interests lie in cinematic genre studies, the use of video as an alternative media practice and (trans)national cinemas.

She has directed several short films and documentaries and has, more recently, been working as a local producer for international productions with a leg in İstanbul. Furthermore, she is a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Communication of Kadir Has University.

FILMER FORGE: Porto Femme - frames of self-reflection

Speakers: Rita Capucho & Ana Castro

FILMER FORGE 2019

Rita Capucho is a film festival director, programmer and producer. She is codirector of the Porto Femme International Film Festival and programmer of the Porto Femme Sessions. She is PhD student in Artistic Studies, specializing in Film and Image Studies at the University of Coimbra. She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Art Studies from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra. She is a member of the Working Group on Artistic Currents and Intellectual Movements of the CEIS20 – Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of the 20th Century of the University of Coimbra and the group Image, Art, Ethics and Society of the Federal University of Pará.

Rita was one of the founding members of the AVANCA | CINEMA – International Cinema Conference – Art, Technology, Communication and also editorial producer of the International Journal of Cinema. She has been a jury member at several international and national film festivals and also belongs to the organization of the São Tomé Festfilm. Member of the Poetic Group of Aveiro, she organizes the Poetry Slam Aveiro, as well as other events related to poetry. She was a programmer at Dolce Vita’s Ovar Cinema, at “The Thursdays of Cinema” of the Movie Theater of Estarreja and at “The Films of Our Tuesdays”of Aveiro Theater.

 

Ana Castro has a Master’s degree in Communication and Multimedia, specialization in Digital Audiovisual, from the University of Aveiro and a degree in Theater and Performative Arts from the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.

During the years 2015 and 2016, she was responsible for the programming of the “The Thursdays of Cinema” of the Movie Theater of Estarreja and at “The Films of Our Tuesdays”of Aveiro Theater, by the entities Cine-Club of Avanca and Plano Obrigatório respectively.

Was a jury member at some film festivals.

Being a member of the direction of Cine-Club of Avanca, she has played since 2014 several functions in the organization of the AVANCA – International Meetings of Cinema, Television, Video and Multimedia.

She works in the field of Digital Marketing at the company Macieira de Castro, Engenharia Lda. and Douro Cruzinha Valley – Agricultura e Enoturismo, Lda.

She has extensive experience in project planning and management, setting up funding programs, event management, and distribution of cultural products. She has been involved in the preparation and implementation of more than 10 internationally distributed fiction and documentary short films, and has played an active role in securing the funding and realization of a number of performances locally. Her focus is on institutional reform, optimization and access to funding for independent artists and artistic formations, socially engaged art and industries. She holds master’s degrees in Production and management of creative industries and Regional development and public works – social and cultural development of regions.

Sandy Lieberson has been a major figure in the film industry in Europe and America since the 1960s, having acted as agent for among others, Sergio Leone, Peter Sellers, Richard Harris, Lindsay Anderson and the Rolling Stones. After producing Performance and Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus, he formed Goodtime/VPS with David Puttnam in 1970, going on to produce some of the most significant British films of the 1970s and 1980s. From 1977 Sandy was International VP of Production and Marketing and later President worldwide production at 20th Century Fox, supervising the international launches of, among others, the early Star Wars films, and supervising the development and production of films by Herzog, Roeg, Bertolucci, Zinneman, Kurosawa and Ridley Scott.

Founder and Chair of Film London, launching the groundbreaking Microwave Fund, Artists Moving Image and Production Finance Market. A Co-founder of The Berlin Talent Campus, originator of the Producers Course at the NFTS and currently an advisor and contributor to a wide range of organizations and projects dedicated to the development of talent and skill in the film and media industries. Most recently executive producer of British Legends of Stage & Screen for Sky Arts/Sundance Channel.

 

Faisal-Azam Qureshi has worked in the UK and US on various features and short productions. He was Associate Producer on the BAFTA winning feature film, FOUR LIONS and has continued working with the director on other projects. As a screenwriter, Faisal has worked with companies such as Bazelev, Benaroya Pictures, DNA Films and BBC Drama. He also works on factual productions, the most recent being a major documentary by AMOS Pictures on the Manchester bombing for BBC2. He is a visiting lecturer at the Escula Internacional Cine y TV in Cuba.

90 Minutes Short: short film issues from idea to distribution

Vítězslav Chovanec graduated from Film and Audio-Visual Culture Studies at Masaryk University in Brno. During his studies he worked for Czech Television as an assistant dramaturge. Since 2010, he worked for several film festivals including Cinema Mundi, Karlovy Vary IFF, Ji.hlava IDFF or Mezipatra IQFF.

 As a journalist, Vítězslav has contributed to various Czech outlets including 25fps, Film a doba, and he is still writing for magazine Cinepur. He is also a member of programming team of One World Human Rights Film Festival in Prague. In September 2017, he joined the team of the Czech Film Center, a division of Czech Film Fund, where he is responsible for promotion of Czech documentary and short films abroad.

 

Peter Murdmaa was born 1n December 1, 1974. His journey in the world of film started at an early age when he was actively engaged in photography and camera work. Peter has graduated in cinematography and in film production in Baltic Film, Media, Arts and Communication School of Tallinn University. He has participated in making documentaries as a cinematographer as well a director, also produced short films in fiction. Peter has organized several movie events, being an active participant in the development of the Estonian film landscape.

In 2013, he was the organizer and director of Sleepwalkers, the international short film festival, which heightened his commitment in further developing the field of short films.

In 2014 he founded ShortEst Short Film Center that has the goal to introduce audiovisual short forms into Estonia and to the rest of the world. ShortEst also aims to promote short films taking into account the needs of filmmakers and those in the film industry as well as those of the audience. His mission is to bring the audiovisual short form to the big screen in as many ways possible.

FILMER FORGE 2019

Fabian Driehorst studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne and founded the studio “Fabian&Fred” with Frédéric Schuld in 2011. He is a producer of documentaries, animation and experimental films. Fabian used to work as a cinematographer and director on documentaries and experimental films that were exhibited all over the world. In 2016 he had the honor to be part of the Berlinale Talents program as a producer. His first documentary feature film premiered at International Hofer Filmtage in 2014, his first animated short film at Berlinale 2015. His productions could win several international awards. And he could win production grants from Doha Film Fund, AFAC, The Film Prize of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Jihlava Film Fund in 2017 and ’18.

 

After graduating in law and filmmaking, in 2009 Katya Trichkova founded and managed Contrast Films, a production company whose main objective is to develop and produce fiction and documentaries. Since 2011, she works very closely with the Bulgarian director and producer Stephan Komandarev as well as an independent producer for other Bulgarian production companies.

Her recent filmography includes ROUNDS by Stephan Komandarev (2019, Sarajevo FF), DIRECTIONS by Stephan Komandarev (2017, Un Certain Regard, Festival de Cannes ), CAINI by Bogdan Mirica (2016, FIPRESCI Prize,  Un Certain Regard, Festival de Cannes)  and the short films CLOTHES by Vesselin Boydev (2017, Jameson film award – Best Bulgarian Short film at Sofia IFF and Bulgarian Film Academy awards) and CHAIN by Eicke Bettinga (2015, Best short film at Edem IFF and ASIANA IFF).

Katya is EAVE and EURODOC graduate and participant in Sarajevo Talent Campus, Kyoto Filmmakers Lab and ExOriente Programme.

 

Vessela Dantcheva is animation professional since her graduation in animation in 2002. She is a co-founder of Compote Collective production studio. During the past 11 years she develops, directs and produces independent animation films, many of which are highly valued in the international animation industry. Often she is invited as a jury member. Her filmography includes Hierarchy Glitch (2019), Women deserve more (2018), Travelling Country (2016), Mark and Verse (2015), Re-cycling (2015), Father (2012), Anna Blume (2009), Sometimes (2008), Easy (2004), Wish (2004), Snowman (2002), Wake up (2002), Pull Over (2001).

Filmmaking: passion vs job

Speaker:  Aleksandra Czenczek

Aleksandra's debut feature 'Dolls Can't Cry' together with her short films have been screened and awarded prizes at over 70 film festivals worldwide including Young Artist Academy Awards in LA and Afrodite Award in Rome. Her latest feature 'Mother' (in development) has been shortlisted by Sundance Script Lab and received script development funding from the Polish Film Institute. She has a background in Visual Effects and has been awarded an Emmy Award for her work on David Attenborough series.
