Ruaridh studied film at Harrow College, Polytechnic of Central London. He joined the industry as a runner and has spent the last eleven years working within the Assistant Director’s department as a freelancer on films, commercials and music videos. He set up Firstlight Pictures in 1997 with Dickon Le Marchant so they could pursue their own projects. Firstlight has been involved in some exciting New media work, shooting films for CDROMS for Ford Europe and Ericsson. In 1998 Ruaridh directed The Verge, Firstlight’s first drama, which was selected for The BBC British Short Film Festival. His second film, a car stopped, is totally self-funded. (The result of six years of ‘set-aside’ from each pay cheque as an AD.) It has been screened at The Palm Springs Film Festival; The Edinburgh International Film Festival; the BBC British Short Film Festival and The Raindance Film Festival. The film was also short-listed for The Turner Classic Movie Prize and subsequently broadcast on TCM, (Dec,2000). The film was selected for broadcast on The Shooting Gallery on Ch4. And has been broadcast again on several occasions, reaching an estimated audience of over a million viewers.
The Barn is Ruaridh’s first Feature film. The Film was selected for the Raindance Film Festival in 2004 and went on to win The Raindance Award, (for the best “no-budget” British Film), at The British Independent Film Awards, (BIFAS). The Barn was also selected for The Britspotting Festival in Berlin, The British Commonwealth Film Festival in Manchester and was the only British film selected for The Koscalin International Film Festival in Poland In 2005. Ruaridh was been invited, with DOP Oliver Schofield to present a retrospective of all his films to date to The Coastside Film Society in Half Moon Bay,California.
In 2010 Ruaridh directed the short Film Interlude, which was selected for The Raindance Film Festival in London.
