Joachim Frederik de Vries' (born: 13th December 1979, Nieuwegein, the Netherlands) interest in cinema came at the age of 17. In the second last year of the Rudolf Steiner School (high school) he decided to make a video film. Ambitious as he was he adapted a novel and with a cheap VHS camera he shot a 30-minute film with classmates and teachers in the leading roles. It was a very unprofessional made film but afterwards he knew that making films and telling stories was going to be his passion in life. He graduated in 2004 at the Utrecht School of the Arts. During his study he made experimental films and documentaries. In his third year he made a big step forward when shooting the 25-minute film 'Gesloten' (aka 'Locked"). The first film shot on film and with a great cast and crew. 'Gesloten' was selected for some film festivals. His next film 'Villa de Ves', (graduation film) was a very ambitious project. He wrote, produced and directed this 33-minute film, which was shot in Belgium. With no money and no equipment at school he had to come up with creative measures to finance this project. Jochem managed to get a lot of sponsors and finally shot 'Villa de Ves' on anamorphic lenses on 35mm with almost the same crew as 'Gesloten'. After school he followed a workshop screenwriting at the Amsterdam Script School and he made some short films. The most of them were produced by NFI Productions. In 2007-2008 Jochem attended a Masterclass at the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing in Poland where he developed a 120-minutes screenplay for what hopefully is going to be his first feature film. This year one of his big dreams became reality cause his short film MISSEN was nominated for a Palm d'Or at the 62e Festival de Cannes.
